Choose a season
Winters are very cold in Venice and the summers are warmer than in Britain. Temperatures are often negative in the winter and the
wind will chill you to the bone. In the summer, the tourists are too numerous and the hotels become very expensive.
The best months to visit are certainly may and october with agreeable temperatures and a minimal number of tourists.
This table of temperatures and rainy days will certainly help you determine the best time of year for you to go.

Preparing your luggage
You will need a good pair of shoes (ideally walking shoes) because you will discover Venice on foot. Don’t forget some warm clothes if you are going in the winter, because of the wind and the humidity from the canals you might find yourself chilled to the bone. Don’t forget an umbrella and a windbreaker…You will also need a map of Venice, it will be of great service but you will get lost sooner or later (that’s one of the pleasures !). Lastly, your camera !
Budget
The currency in Italy is the euro. There are many cash point machines all over the town. Unfortunately, everything is expensive, even prohibitive, especially in the summer. You will be spending the most on accommodation. Concerning food, a sandwich or a salad instead of a meal in a restaurant will help you economize a little money. Use your money for the museums, palaces and for the transport.
Gastronomy
While in Venice why don’t you try some of its specialties ?
- baccalà mantecato (fish and potato pie)
- sarde in saor (sardines in onions)
- granseole (small sea spiders)
- seppie all’inchiostro (cuttlefish in ink with polenta)
- moleche (small grilled crabs)
- fegato alla veneziana (veal liver with onions)
Security
Venice is not a particularly dangerous town and you can walk around without a great deal of risk. On the other hand, pick pockets are omnipresent in the crowds, stay vigilant ! If you came in the car, leave nothing of value inside. Theft from cars is often a problem in the car parks around Venice.
